7 Key Interior Design Trends To Look Out For In 2018

As we welcome in the New Year, it’s out with the old and in with the new. The London Autumn/Winter Design Week in 2017 has revealed some interesting trends for 2018, with the latest designs focusing on calm comfort, turning any style of London property, be it a modern City apartment or a terraced Victorian house, into a luxurious haven of relaxation and aesthetic beauty.

If you’re looking to update your interiors, Here’s 7 key interior design trends predicted to be big in 2018.

1. Colourful Kitchens

All-white kitchens are still popular, but do you really want a kitchen that looks exactly like everybody else’s? In 2018 it’s time to mix and match finishes and materials to create a more eclectic look.

Colourful splashbacks and painted feature islands in dark olive hues or matte black can add depth and contrast by breaking up the visuals to create warmth, light and space in an all-white kitchen.

2. Eclectic Pieces

Bland, generic furniture is also on its way out. Mix and match your living area furniture with one-off statement pieces and a mixture of colours, styles and periods to create a unique look of comfort and originality.

3. New Pinks

Although ‘pink’ is still trending, the baby girl, salmony ‘Millennium Pink’ is being replaced by calmer more understated blush and rosy hues which look particularly good on accent pieces or upholstery.

Dulux recently released their hero colour for 2018, a beautiful dusky pink called ‘Heart Wood’, a combination of mauve and taupe to bring comfort and warmth to your home without being too girly pink.

4. Accent Ceilings

Forget accent walls, and look up! 2018 is the year of the accent ceiling. Create a statement ceiling with bold shades, textured wallpapers, tiles, tin or wooden beams to add depth and personality to your rooms.

5. Metallics

Classic, aged brass and tarnished gold incorporated into furniture and accessories are fast replacing the overtly shiny copper look that’s been popular over the last few years. Brass and gold have a timeless look and can easily blend with existing furniture to create a sophisticated look of warmth without being too ostentatious.

6. Natural Materials

Emphasis in 2018 will be on natural materials that add texture to your rooms, such as woven textiles, hand knit wool and wicker. Natural materials blend seamlessly with luxurious soft velvets and coarse, rougher finishes such as reclaimed wood.

Flooring is also moving towards a more natural look. Earthenware terra cotta tiles add warmth and character while the classic herringbone pattern of wooden parquet flooring never dates and looks fantastic in both modern and traditional settings.

7. Big Art

2018 marks the end of gallery walls and welcomes instead, giant art work that makes a statement. Big, eye-catching pieces can be hung above the fireplace, propped up against a wall or even used instead of a traditional bed head.
